Portrait - Sir Thomas PlayfordThe Playford Memorial Trust was established in 1982-83 to perpetuate the memory of South Australia's longest serving Premier, Sir Thomas Playford.

The initiative came from the Tonkin Liberal Government after the death of Sir Thomas in 1981.

The Trust deed requires the Trust to establish a fund 'to promote, encourage and finance research and development of projects relating to the primary, secondary, tertiary and mining industries which will be of practical use and benefit to South Australians'.

The State Government has again committed their support by way of $75,000 annually commencing from 1 July 2007. This is in addition to the provision of the services of an Executive Officer within the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

The Trust is an independent organisation which enjoys bi-partisan support. The Trustees come from many walks of life and give their services without fee. Since establishment, the Trust has disbursed more than $320,000 from income in the form of prizes, scholarship stipends and grants. The capital continues to be invested.
